Not many artists take the trouble to ensure that each track on an album lasts an exact whole number of minutes, but that's the kind of attention to detail you can expect from Restive. From the synth washes and sporadic clicks of opener "aguirre" to the digital snowstorm of "chillwindz", via the jigsaw-like rhythmic interplay of "bouncebeats" and "brainloops", this album is a compelling example of electronic music off the beaten track. During November and December 2012, I presented a multichannel sound installation at the AVA gallery (http://www.ava.co.za/) in Cape Town. The installation consists of several hours of field recordings from in and around Cape Town, together with other source material which is played back from 3 devices set to random, repeat playback. The whole initiative is under the aegis of the Global Health Incubator, a laboratory established in July 2009 in Topolò by Mario Raviglione (WHO... It goes without saying that we always look forward to releasing the work of Restive, whose work has always been fascinatingly original in approach and execution. His emergence from the (likely non-existent) South African experimental glitch-ambient scene is a marvel in itself, considering the high cost and strong regulation of internet service in SA. Restive's cubistic compositions have continued to push through these limitations: as such what else could we at TTHQ do but grab our end of the...
We were fortunate enough to stumble across the music of Restive in the Open Source Audio section of the archive, and immediately became fascinated with the sounds and approach used by the artist. After some contact on Myspace, we were pleased to find the music of Restive amenable to being rereleased on Timetheory, and of his many sonic space journals, #14 was selected to be presented here. Little can be said about the music on "Captured Borbs..." that is not made amply clear by the... Topics: ambient, glitch, soundscape, restive
